Its primary function involves the scanning and decoding of both linear and 2D barcodes on breast implant devices, enabling users to seamlessly upload data directly to the NBIR. Furthermore, the application allows participants to supplement this information with additional details pertaining to the patient, procedural context, and specifics regarding both implanted and explanted devices.

This tool significantly reduces the burden of manual data entry by automatically populating relevant device information into the registry, thereby streamlining the reporting process for healthcare professionals involved in implant procedures.

The NBIR itself represents a collaborative effort among The Plastic Surgery Foundation, the FDA, and various breast implant device manufacturers. Its mission is to enhance post-market surveillance systems for both existing and forthcoming breast implant devices. As a prospective, non-interventional registry focused on outcome tracking and safety surveillance, the NBIR also serves as a quality improvement initiative for breast surgery practices.
